If your meeting report shows a “Restricted Data” error, Read joined your Zoom meeting but didn’t get permission to record it. Zoom doesn’t allow anyone to record a meeting without the host’s approval. This article explains why this happens and how to fix it.
Connect your Zoom account first
Zoom now requires notetakers like Read to be authorized by a signed-in Zoom user. For Read to join and record a Zoom meeting:
- Your Zoom account must be connected to Read. You can connect it from Integrations > Zoom.
- You must be in the meeting, signed in to that same Zoom account.
If you’re the meeting host and your Zoom account is connected, Read already has permission to record, so you won’t need to approve a request during the meeting.
For more details, see Upcoming Changes to Zoom Meetings.
Why Read couldn’t record
You’ll usually see the “Restricted Data” error for one of these reasons:
- The host denied Read’s request to join.
- The host let Read in but denied its request to record. This can happen when someone other than the host brings Read to the meeting. The host sees a pop-up in Zoom asking them to let Read record. If they deny or ignore it, Read stays in the meeting but can’t record.
- The host’s Zoom settings don’t allow local recording. If Record to computer files is turned off, Read’s request to record is denied automatically. See the settings below.
Check the host’s Zoom recording settings
The meeting host needs two recording settings turned on, plus one optional setting:
| Setting | Required? |
|---|---|
| Record to computer files | Required |
| External meeting participants | Required |
| Auto approve their permission requests | Optional. It approves Read’s recording request automatically. |
These settings exist at the user, group, and account level in Zoom. If a setting is turned off at the account or group level, it overrides your user settings. Someone with access to those pages may need to check them for you.
User level

Account level (Zoom admins)

If Read can’t join at all
If Read isn’t getting into the meeting at all, the meeting may be set so only signed-in Zoom users can join. See How do I allow unauthenticated users to join Zoom?.
