There are several ways to stop Read AI from recording a meeting, before it starts or while it’s happening. Which one to use depends on when you want to stop Read and how it joined the meeting.
Before the meeting
If you’re an external invitee: use the opt-out email
When someone schedules a meeting with Read, external invitees may get an email ahead of time letting them know the meeting will be recorded. To opt out, use the link in that email. Read won’t join the meeting, and the meeting is marked Opt Out. See Advance Notice and Opt Out of Meeting Recording.
If you invited Read: turn it off for the meeting
Go to your Calendar page and turn off Add Read? for the meeting at least 15 minutes before it starts.
If you’re the host: deny Read’s request to join
On most platforms, Read asks to be let into the meeting. Deny the request to keep it out. The steps depend on the platform. See Admitting and Removing Read from a Meeting.
During the meeting
When Read joins as a participant (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet)
When Read joins as a visible participant, it posts a message in the meeting chat. Any participant can then stop the recording using a chat command or the opt-out link.
| Option | What happens |
|---|---|
| “Read Stop” (type it in the chat) | Read leaves the meeting and creates a report from what it captured before the command. |
| “Opt Out” (type it in the chat) or the opt-out link | Read leaves the meeting and deletes everything it captured. No report is created. |
If Read posted an opt-out link in the chat, click the link to opt out. If there’s no link, type “Opt Out.”.
Use Read Stop if you’re fine keeping what was captured so far and just want the recording to end. Use Opt Out if you don’t want anything from the meeting saved.
Who can do this? Any participant. The host and the person who invited Read don’t need to approve it. If anyone opts out, recording stops for everyone in the meeting and the data from that meeting is deleted.
When Read records through Google Meet native recording
With native recording, Read doesn’t join as a participant or post a chat message, so chat commands don’t work. Instead, any participant can:
- Stop recording and keep a report: Click the Read AI logo at the top right, then click Stop sharing.
- Opt out and delete the recording: Click the 9-dot grid in the bottom right and open the Read AI app. Click the Read AI logo at the bottom left, then select Opt out.
See Using Read’s Google Meet Native Recording.
When someone records with the Read desktop or mobile app
The Read desktop and mobile apps record audio on the user’s own device. Read doesn’t join the meeting as a participant, so chat commands and opt-out links don’t apply. If you think someone is recording you with the Read app and you haven’t agreed to it, ask them or the host directly.
Zoom note
Read can only join a Zoom meeting if the person who invited it has connected their Zoom account to Read and is in the meeting, signed in to that account. Because of this, you may not see a request to admit Read. Read still shows up in the participant list, and the chat commands still work. See Upcoming Changes to Zoom Meetings.
